“Let them eat cake!” Incorrectly credited to Marie Antoinette, historians believe that this statement was likely made by an unnamed “great French princess” upon being informed that the peasants had no bread to eat. When deliberated upon, the quotation reflects a frivolous disregard for the starving peasants or a poor understanding of their plight. Or, more likely, both. Today’s gun control lobby mirrors the sentiment, and we discuss it further in the Oct/Nov issue of Personal Defense World.

Personal Defense World Oct/Nov: Guns for Me, But Not for Thee

In today’s United States of America, the same phrase, while left unsaid, is acted out daily by big-city Democrat mayors. Specifically, as they continue to push ever more restrictive gun laws on their “subjects” while at the same time blissfully walking around surrounded by dozens of armed security guards.

The oft-used anti-gun catchphrase, “Why does anybody need that many guns?” is regularly said of us “lesser” Americans. But it’s seldom used when describing these “important” individuals’ security teams.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is perhaps the best example of this phenomenon. Many considered it excessive back when it was revealed that then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot had created a special security detail.

The detail was made up of 65 officers, five sergeants, and a lieutenant, for a total of 71 armed personnel. That was in addition to her separate bodyguard detail that included another 20 officers.

Apparently, 91 armed protectors weren’t enough for new Mayor Johnson. He now has 149 sworn officers to keep him safe, according to a recent report at TheTruthAboutGuns.com.

Unfortunately for average citizens, Chicago saw a 38% increase in major crimes during Johnson’s first 30 days in office. This includes 53 people shot, 11 fatally, over the Memorial Day weekend!

One wonders how many of those shootings could have been dissuaded with another 150 cops on the street instead of protecting the mayor.

Big-City Mayors Know Gun Control Doesn’t Work

Interestingly, a recent situation in St. Louis proved that some of these big-city mayors don’t even believe in the gun control measures they’re constantly pushing.

In April, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones sent a text to her father discussing the effectiveness of gun control. In it, she wrote, “Chicago has strict gun laws as well, but that doesn’t deter gun violence.”

The revelation came after a reporter for KSDK News in St. Louis posted a series of the Democrat mayor’s text messages on Twitter after acquiring them through an open records request. It’s an interesting statement, indeed.

Especially considering that Jones is a co-chair of Michael Bloomberg’s gun-ban group Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG). The group is made up of big-city Democrat mayors solely focused on creating more restrictions on gun ownership.

Despite her admission, Jones again pushed hard for more gun control after a public murder in June when a young man was killed and 11 others injured.

“Our state’s lax gun laws make our challenge even more difficult,” Jones said at the time. It was just a few months after the text to her father.

“The legislature’s lack of action on gun safety laws encourages the proliferation of guns on our streets and puts our responding officers directly in harm’s way.”

In the end, “Guns for me, but not for thee,” is the 21st-century American version of “Let them eat cake.”

Probably an even better equivalent would be the more familiar phrase, “Screw ’em!”

For those stuck in some of America’s treacherous big cities, danger is a constant reality every minute of every day. I’m sure it’s little solace for them knowing that their mayors are so well protected.
