One of the big boys finally delivered a pistol so many of us have been asking for. The Springfield Armory Prodigy comprises a double-stack 9mm platform, with variants in both 4.25- and 5-inch platforms. Whether you shoot to compete or carry for duty or defense, the Prodigy brings much to the table.
Springfield Armory DS Prodigy Details
Right from the jump, keeping with current trends, the Prodigy includes an optics-ready design. It comes equipped with a raised fiber-optic front and U-notch rear sights. An ambidextrous safety and Picatinny rail brings more standard utility.
The Prodigy’s steel forged steel receiver utilizes a a polymer grip module. The design enables a 17+1 capacity in a flush-fit magazine for carry. Meanwhile, the 20+1 extended magazine brings up the round count. For competition, an optional 26-round magazine get shooters where they need to be.
The polymer grip module features a wraparound Adaptive Grip Texture. Used previously on the Hellcat family of pistols, it proves popular. Up top, a forged steel slide incorporates forward serrations. Both it and and the steel receiver feature a rugged black Cerakote finish. A match-grade bushingless forged stainless steel bull barrel should deliver plenty of accuracy.
Optics-Ready For Duty, Defense or Sport
The Prodigy’s optics-ready system accepts a wide range of optical sights. Developed with Agency Arms, the Prodigy comes equipped with the AOS (Agency Optic System). Designed for the 1911 DS, the system comes machined from billet 17-4 stainless steel. The optic plates come fitted with a rear sight, designed specifically to preserve visible iron sights for an intuitive sight picture and instant target acquisition, according to Springfield Armory.
The pistol ships with a cover plate with rear sight. It also includes one optics-mounting plate designed for the HEX Dragonfly, along with a variety of popular red dot sights. Additional optional plates can be found in the Springfield Armory Store.
