Big news out of SIG Sauer today. The company announces the release of its latest upgrade to the contract-winning M17/M17 line of semi-auto pistols, dubbed the XSeries. The new SIG M17X and M18X XSeries pistols each come with a factory-mounted ROMEO-M17 red dot optic, among other performance upgrades.

In 2017, SIG won the coveted Army Modular Handgun System contract. Then the other dominoes began to fall, with all other services eventually switching to the new XM17 and XM18 9mm pistols. Now SIG continues pushing the envelope on the platform, introducing a wide range of civilian mods and builds based on the military’s new sidearm. The latest–the XSeries–brings tremendous upgrade for those looking to run an optic-ready variant of the martial pistol.

First off, this one is all M17 and M18, respectively. So the XSeries brings all the P320/M17/M18 performance and reliability. But it adds a ROMEO-M17 red dot optic fitted into a ruggedized aluminum housing. The optic includes an aspheric glass lens to eliminate distortion. The unit comes fully enclosed and sealed for protection from the elements. SIG designed this optic specifically for the M17 and M18 pistol. It mount directly using SIG’s SIG LOC system, positioning it low on the slide and co-witnessing with the included iron sights. The ROMEO-M17 recently received an NSN number assignment, a critical step toward fielding for American troops.

“The assignment of an NSN number is an exciting achievement for SIG SAUER Electro-Optics and the ROMEO product line. With the global demand for these products the NSN assignment will allow for ease in the procurement process, the ability to increase our reach within the NATO countries, and faster deployment,” said Andy York, President, SIG SAUER Electro-Optics. “This assignment is also significant to non-NATO customers and civilians as the NSN designation does not come easily and signifies that the ROMEO-M17 has achieved a testing and use acceptance by the world’s most discerning military customers.”

Each pistol also includes the XSeries coyote tan grip module. This variant comes with an extended beavertail, aggressive grip stippling and deeper undercuts for better purchase and control. The XSeries grip also sports a magwell extension for faster mag reloads. Finally, an XSeries flat-blade trigger provides another welcome upgrade.
