Kicks against knife attack.
Watch and learn:
Kicks vs. Knife — Officers of Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) stab a man to death
Ah, the stupidity of kicking without a good tactical setup, and on a slippery ground too…. You see, a good tactical setup for your attack (which could be a defense), is such that your attack doesn’t run into the opponent’s weapons. Those weapons may be the opponent’s fists, elbows, knees, boots, knives, crowbars, whatever. And throwing your punches while being in front of the opponent, in his center line, puts you in the line of fire of all his weapons. It is even worse to kick while being in the opponent’s center line — because while kicking, you impair your mobility, duh, while still being in his line of fire, and you serve your leg for carving, which disables you. For mobility — for sidestepping, bobbing and weaving, moving to the opponent’s blind side — you need to keep both your feet close to the ground, duh. Then, only after you got off the opponent’s line of fire, and best if onto his blind side, then use your weapons.
See examples of bad and good tactical setup drills for kicks in High Kicks with Tactically Sound Setups.
BTW, the kicker was lucky to die there. It could be worse, the FSB officers could have taken him to an interrogation room).

Self-Defense Moves
For your defense moves to work under stress they must be based on your natural, instinctive reactions, require little strength and limited range of motion, and be proven in fighting experience.
To learn how your natural reactions can instantly defeat any unarmed attack, see the video Basic Instincts of Self-Defense.
Defend Against Weapons
To defend against weapons you have to know how they are used. Also—every stick has two ends … the weapon of attack may become a weapon of defense in your hand …
To learn how the typical street weapons (club, knife, razor) are used by an experienced streetfighter and how to practice with them, see the video Self-Defense: Tools of attack—Club, Hatchet, Blackjack, Knife, Straight Razor.
Mental Toughness
Staying cool under pressure is more important for self-defense than being physically fit and technically skilled. If you can’t control your mind what can you control?
