Black Soldier Fly Bin Design Pictures

Today, Adam shares pictures of his Black Soldier Fly bin design:

“Hi David,

You mentioned in a recent video that you’d like to see other people black soldier fly rigs.. so I thought I’d share mine.  I have attached some pictures of one a built a couple of years ago to supplement our chickens diet. It’s all from scrap wood I had around the house. I think I used plans from Northwest Redworms.

It has worked well and I got to the point of experimenting with freezing and dehydrating them to they were so prolific.

One thing I underestimated was the amount the larvae an eat. I originally purchased the larvae online to start the system. They grew quickly  and soon I could not seem to feed them enough, and when winter arrived and it kinda went on hiatus for several months. I have recently got it going again with larvae that showed up in my “can-o-worm” bins.

From a strictly economic angle, it’s way cheaper to just buy eggs, and skip hoarding buckets of rotting slop to feed your smelly maggot farm to feed you bourgeoisie chickens. But isn’t that just the nature of the hyper efficiency vs. resilience/redundancy paradox we all have to confront?

Blessings,

Adam

Thank you, Adam. This is a good-looking bin design. I might have to build something similar and put it right in my chicken run. -DTG
