Why Consider an Advanced Herbal Course?

There are many reasons why an advanced herbal course might appeal to gardeners and homesteaders alike.

Planning to become a licensed herbalist is only one reason, but perhaps one of the more common ones. Becoming a licensed herbalist takes many hours of hands-on learning as well as coursework like this.

Understanding the nature of herbs and how herbs work also has plenty of other benefits. Especially these days when everything seems so uncertain!

Or maybe your family may have decided that one member (or the entire family unit) should study self-sufficiency, healthcare, and survivalist topics.

Whether this is for survival prep or just because you feel the hospital or doctor is too far away from your homestead, knowing various herbs and their properties can help set your mind at ease.

You may want to know more about herbalism so you can open an herbal store and help customers learn about what to buy. Or, you may have a family member with a specific medical condition, and you wish to contribute everything possible at your disposal.

All of these are reasons why an advanced herbal course might be just what you need. You may even have a combination of reasons. Then again, none of the above options may apply to you.

Here’s a Brief Course Preview:

  • Herbal Therapy and Advanced Formulation
  • Manufacturing and Marketing Herbal Products
  • Building Your Herbal Clinical Practice

About The Herbal Academy’s Advanced Herbal Course

The Herbal Academy, also known as the International School of Herbal Arts and Sciences, is loaded with reliable and helpful data about herbs. They offer three popular herb courses.

The Herbal Academy’s Introductory Herbal Course is for novice gardeners and aspiring herbalists with little to no herbal experience. The course instructors give you all the essential herb data you need, information on common herbs – and lists treatments for common ailments.

Meanwhile, The Herbal Academy’s Intermediate Herbal Course is for those who already understand herbal basics and want more advanced herb data. The intermediate herbal course has ten units. That compares to the introductory course’s six units and covers the herbs in more depth. The intermediate herb course also goes over in more detail just how the herbs affect you, therapeutics, and energetics.

That brings you to the Herbal Academy’s Advanced Herbal Course – which has 14 units. You don’t need to have taken their other courses, but they, of course, recommend you to have done so.

The advanced course takes you above and beyond the learning stage and challenges you to test your knowledge of herbs. The advanced herb course also rocks for sharpening your critical thinking. The idea is to help you figure out what is wrong and how herbs can help remedy the situation.

The advanced herbal course also offers an in-depth look at your body and little-known problems and solutions regarding the world of herbs.

All of these advanced features help pave the way onto your road to becoming an expert or professional herbal practitioner. Many take the Herbal Academy’s Advanced course as their path to getting professional membership with the American Herbalists Guild.

The Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course Review and First Impressions

We’ve examined The Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course, and we’re ready to share our insights. What did we think of the curriculum, the content, the layout, the value – and the overall experience?

Let’s take a closer look.

Off the Top

The first thing about The Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course that stood out to me was how Herbal Academy gives you three years to complete the course. This generous duration is the longest I have ever seen for an online program!

True, there is a ton of herbal information within the course syllabus that you have to go through to earn the certificate at the end. Still, the timespan is quite generous and gives you some breathing room.

I also loved the printouts they included of charts, recipes, flipbooks, and herbal monographs. Their videos are also perfect for getting to see what you are doing instead of just reading it. In addition, this course even gives you one-on-one guidance from the instructors.

Another thing about The Herbal Academy is that you get deals on herbs that you need. If you’re trying to find rare herbs that are tricky to source elsewhere – this comes in handy.

On the downside, the price of this course is quite costly. The advanced training has tons of modules and benefits. I get that. However, you may have to save up for a bit to afford the course. Even the monthly cost may seem out of reach for many of our fellow homesteaders on a tight budget.

Dietary and Lifestyle

In addition to telling you about herbs, the Herbal Academy’s Advanced Herbal Course also gives you lifestyle tips. I couldn’t decide if I liked this or not. There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages to their emphasis on dietary health, though, and it can certainly be helpful. But, I’m not 100% sure of the impact.

For example, one thing that many sections emphasize is the importance of exercise. I am pretty sure that everyone already knows that exercise is critical to one’s health – especially homesteaders and outdoor enthusiasts! So, in that respect, I see that as being a bit redundant.

However, the advanced herbal course does go the extra mile by telling you exactly how getting exercise helps tie into overall health. You also get ample documentation to help understand WHY exercise benefits your bodily health – which is good to know.

You’ll also dig deep into other vital health systems. You’ll discover why sleep is critical for your endocrine system’s health, essential vitamins, plus advanced insights all commendable herbalists should learn.

What I Didn’t Like About The Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course

It’s easy for budding herbalists to suffer from information overload during the course. The course also feels disorganized at times.

Here’s what I mean.

Overall – The Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course offers a whole lot more than just education on herbs.

The only thing that I am not so sure about is why I would want all of this information on topics other than herbs when I am paying to learn more about herbs and how to use them.

Perhaps if these sections on sleep, vitamins, et cetera included some helpful herbs with them – which I think would be beneficial anyway – that would be better.

However, the advanced herbal course doesn’t do that. The instructors reference herbs in these sections and also tell you the potential herbs applicable for various situations. BUT – if I want to find an herb to help with sleep (for example,) I have to go back to previous sections.

Overall, Herbal Academy’s Advanced Herbal Course is Still Well-Rounded

What I just said about information overload may seem a little harsh on the course. I’m not saying the information is useless – it’s fun, entertaining, and valuable.

Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course strives to help you understand much more than merely using an herb for any problem. Instead –  the course teaches how the human body works – in its entirety.

If you want to know about the herbs, and you’re not interested in why – then the course is too advanced for you. However, if you are looking to become a licensed herbalist, or if you want to understand advanced herbalist topics as they relate to bodily function? Then this information is vital for you to have.

I bet you’ll also develop a reputation as someone who can help shed insights into various underlying causes among your friends and homesteaders!

That’s the real impact of what makes the Herbal Academy course so well-rounded, in my opinion. I don’t think that I will use all of the information within the course lectures. However – I can see that dedicated herbalists and herbalist entrepreneurs will benefit tremendously from the details.

Herbal Academy’s Advanced Herbal Course – What Could Be Slightly Better

I am one of the first to admit that I tend to nitpick almost everything! Herbal Academy’s Advanced Course is no exception. The first thing is the somewhat clunky way of organizing paragraphs.

Yes, the proof of studies done is a nice touch. No, you don’t have to put the study names in parenthesis sprinkled heavily throughout what feels like almost every paragraph.

Here’s what I mean.

Many of the paragraphs had around five sets of parentheses in them. These parentheses made reading feel a lot more tedious, at least to me. I couldn’t help but wonder why they didn’t neatly list the clinical study information at the end of each section.

I also think the formatting could use improvement regarding symbols. The course could have put one of those tiny numbers or symbols in the paragraphs instead.

That way, you would still have the information available should you want to look at it. And, if you’re not interested in detailed figures and symbols, they wouldn’t get in the way.

The other thing that I wasn’t too sure about was the herbs covered in this advanced course. In the Herbal Academy Beginner’s Herbal Course, they seemed to have more common herbs, which I liked and could understand.

However, in the advanced herbal course, I saw multiple herbs that I had never heard of before. And, I have been around herbs long enough to know at least the names of some of the more uncommon ones!

Becoming an herbalist means that you will have to learn about even the rare herbs. However, if that is not your goal, learning about rare herbs that you will possibly never use – or will only use once or twice – can seem like a waste.
