I spent a week down in Florida, attending a cousin’s wedding and visiting my family in Ft. Lauderdale.

While there I got to do some work in the Great South Florida Food Forest Project.

The coconut biochar was a lot of fun. I was surprised by how well it worked.

When we got back to Alabama we discovered that we’d had a lot – a LOT – of rain. I had been afraid upon leaving that it might be hot and dry. Instead, it was cool and rainy. A five-gallon-bucket left outside was almost full, so we had over a foot of rain.

Most everything did okay, though a couple of rows of potatoes have some yellow leaves and black spots. My guess is that it was just too much rain.

On Friday and Saturday we got a lot of work done in the gardens, adding trellises, pulling potatoes, filming a video, chopping down cover crops and more. It’s fun seeing all the new growth and life. Though there are entirely too many cabbage moths and works eating my brassicas.

Also, it’s time to feed everything again – I think the rain washed away a lot of the soil fertility while I was gone. With this dead grit, it’s a battle to keep plants green and happy.
